Preference #8 PART 1: Say Something by A Great Big World ft. Christina Aguilera
“I'll be the one, if you want me to. Anywhere I would've followed you.”
“You can’t leave me,” Harry pleads through tears as he watches you pull clothes from the closet into a suitcase. “You can’t just tell me you’re done and that you want out,” he continues as he rubs his eyes to rid the tears. “Harry, I can’t stay with you. Not like this,” you respond as you turn to face him. “Like how?” he asks in a surprised voice. You roll your eyes and start to put shoes in the suitcase as well. “Tell me. What am I doing wrong? What is it that’s making you leave?” he begins to cry again. You sigh and put down your belongings while you turn to him. “Harry, I’ve tried so hard. So hard. You don’t even want to be with me,” you reply. “That’s not true! Don’t you dare say I don’t want to be with you because I do,” he says in a calm voice. “Then why can’t you tell me that! Why do you have to text all your friends and tell them that you feel lonely because you haven’t found the one? Why do you tell Liam that you think I don’t want to be with you? Why do you tell everyone you want love, except me? Why don’t you ever come to me?” you shouted at him. “You went through my phone?” he asks, clearly upset. “Oh, Harry, that’s not the point! The point is you don’t love me. How can you expect me to love you when you don’t love me?” “I do love you,” he responds. “No, don’t say just because you feel like you should. I can be the one. You know I can love you with all I have and you know I’ll follow you to the ends of Earth and back if you want me to. But you don’t.” At this point, Harry sits on the bed and shakes his head, trying to clear his mind. “I love you, though. Does that not mean anything?” he asks, broken. “Not when you say it out of pity. Or loneliness. You just don’t want to be alone. That’s why I’m leaving. You don’t want my love, you want my attention. And I can’t keep giving it you. Bye, Harry.” You grab your bag and walk out the bedroom, leaving Harry a confused, broken mess on the bed.
“And I am feeling so small. It was over my head, I know nothing at all.”
You honestly didn’t know. Everyone assumed you were playing dumb and were just letting things slide. However, when you started to notice the signs, you knew he had always been going behind your back. Liam was known for break-ups and getting back together quickly. When he broke up with Sophia, he went to you immediately. You were his best friend, after all. When he asked you to be his girlfriend, you agreed happily since you had liked him for a while now. But now here you are, sitting in the living room on Liam’s laptop. Yours had broken down and you needed one to complete homework assignments for uni so Liam had lent you his. When you were going to log on to your email, you saw that his was open and although you’ve never invaded his privacy, there were dozens of messages on the screen from Sophia. With a heavy heart, you started opening them and reading about how much he still loved her, how he wanted her back, how he didn’t want to hurt you. He had been avoiding you for weeks and now you know it’s because he had been going to see her. You never in a million years thought he would ever do this to you. You never though Liam could be capable of making you feel so small. So, unimportant. The front door started to jiggle open and in walks Liam, a massive grin on his face. “Hello, love.” He says as he kisses you cheek. You don’t respond, instead just stare at the email that talked about how much fun they had last weekend. “How was your day?” he asks, sitting next to you. “Peachy,” you reply and throw the laptop in his lap. You stand and walked to the bedroom, grabbing your shoes so you could head out when he came in after you. “No, wait, love, those messages aren’t what they seem-“ “Of course not. Nothing ever is what it seems, is it?” you cut him off. “Babe, I swear I didn’t mean to hurt you. You don’t understand.” You roll your eyes and grab keys to the car, ready to walk out of the house. “I know I don’t. I don’t think anyone would understand that kind of betrayal.” He flinches, your words obviously hurting him. “Let me explain,” he begs as he grabs your hand. You yank it back and grit your teeth as you say, “No, I was in over my head anyway. And explaining won’t help. I know nothing about you, apparently.” With that, you got into the car and drove off, not once thinking about going back to Liam.
“And I will stumble and fall. I'm still learning to love, just starting to crawl.”
“It’s okay! You don’t have to leave! Stay, stay with me and together we can get through this!” Louis was speaking loudly as you walked away from him quickly. You were at an after party for an award show and you had gotten mobbed by paparazzi. One of your biggest pet peeves was people not respecting personal space and this was the final straw. “No, Louis. I’ve had enough.” You respond calmly. “Enough of what? This or me?” he asks sadly. You stop in your tracks and turn to look at him. “Louis, I’m done with all of it. I can’t deal with rumors, with paparazzi, the fans. It’s all too much,” you begin running your hand through your hair in frustration. “Lou, I love you. I mean, I think I do. I’ve never been in love before. If this is what love is, I don’t think I’m completely ready for it.” He walked up to you cautiously and took your hand in his saying, “It’s alright, dear. Love can be scary. But that doesn’t mean you can just run from it when it overwhelms you. That’s not how you deal with it.” he tried reasoning with you. You just stood there, head shaking as you started to tear at the eyes. “Lou, I’m so scared. I don’t want to crash and burn. I can’t afford to end up broken and alone in London. I have no one,” you say sadly. “You have me. And I will never leave you or let you feel alone. Much less broken. Where on Earth did you get the idea that I would leave you? I never would.” You look up into his eyes and see nothing but sincerity. You, however, are still not convinced. “Lou, I think we moved too fast. We knew each for two months when we announced our relationship. We’re freakin’ living together! That’s insane!” you say. “Well, it’s alright though! We can just work on our relationship’s secrecy. We keep more private, I ask paps to back off more. We can do this.” He’s literally begging you now. You can’t say no to him, yet you can’t cave so easily. You’ve been so dependent on him lately that you lost sight of what your independence. “Lou, I’m moving out,” you tell him. “No, no, don’t move out. Don’t leave me, please.” You shake your head and give him a small smile. “I’m not leaving you. Not really, I just need space. From all of this. I’m not breaking up with you exactly, I’m just asking for some time to mull things over. I’m new to love, I need time to figure it out.” Louis nods, slightly unconvinced. “Okay, okay but I’m helping you find a place. I’ll back off a little if you want but I’m not leaving you.” You smiled and kiss his cheek. “That’s all I’m asking for. Space. I need to take baby steps.” “Okay. Sure, we’ll search for flats tomorrow. Can we get back to the party? Or would you rather go home, for the night?” “Home please. I want to be with you before I leave.” He nods and holds your hand as you walk out the building, happy to have such an understanding boy in your life.
